Farnsworth House Threatened by Flooding Again, Preservation Group Vows to Fight Back in ’09

According to the Tribune‘s Blair Kamin, apparently Mies van der Rohe‘s Farnsworth House was once again in danger just weeks ago in late December due to more flooding that struck Illinois’ Fox River. You’ll recall that this past summer found the famous house swimming in water, which led to its immediate closure to tourists and a massive reconstruction effort. Now, after suffering another series of nerve wracking water attacks, the group that manages the house, Landmarks Illinois, is vowing to spend the year figuring out how to stop living in fear of the Fox River and finally do something about it. They’re planning to launch this big goal on Thursday, with a free event here in Chicago. Here are some details:

“One of our major goals for the new year is a serious, perhaps international, competition for flood prevention strategies,” Jim Peters, Landmarks Illinois president, wrote in an e-mail.

This Thursday, Whitney French, the Farnsworth House’s site manager, will describe the two recent floods, including their cleanup and aftermath, in a Landmarks Illinois-sponsored talk at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St. Her lecture, at the center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater, begins at 12:15 p.m. It’s free and open to the public.
