Wander Around! For Fun and Profit!
Here's something that's simple and terrific and one of those types of things that this writer would love to have been involved with from the first, if, of course, he wasn't a such a stick in the mud who makes Pat Boone look exotic and wild. What it is is an interview with the drifting friends, which is basically just a couple of Germans exploring off-the-beaten path locations in their country, which then turned into them giving lectures and holding creative workshops about thinking in that fashion, actively taking the road less travelled in search of unforseen ideas. And isn't that really the way it works in design? You're laying some plan out that looks and feels terrifble, then you remember something like your best friend in fourth grade's socks, and whamo, somehow you've found yourself in Brilliant Town. And these drifting friends folk utilize a terrific teaching method, in that what they say is interesting, sure, but then they're also introducing you to the universally fun weirdo finds of travellers in search of cousins to the world's largest ball of yarn. Here's a little bit from the interview: Serendipity means finding something that you weren't looking for or, in other words, looking for the needle in the haystack and finding the farmer's daughter. When we open our talk we always start by giving some examples of serendipity in human history. Take Viagra, which was thought to be a remedy for angina. Already testing it on humans, the doctors were quite amazed when their test users continued to ask for Viagra even though it didn't seem to cure their angina at all...such findings are serendipity.
