Pleix Flexes for Success
Hopefully you've found this gem in your inbox, which we like to call Bill Viola's "The Passions" for dogs, but is actually called "Birds." We have a very soft spot in our hearts for music videos, mostly because we used to make them, so we wanted to give a little credit where credit was due. Turns out this is the work of hyper-enthusiastic Paris collective Pleix, a group of designers and musicians who've also done videos for Basement Jaxx and Futureshock. They were kind enough to answer our questions in English. Who makes up Pleix? Pleix is a community of digital artists (graphic designers, 3D artists, musicians) willing to mix their skills to gain greater freedom for various projects. We are 7 people all together and we are based in Paris. The Pleix touch could be a common work on limits, contradictions and accidents that show the fragility of the digital world. These artists produce tension by joining together heterogeneous graphics, videos and sounds. We are all based in Paris. We never put our individual names but sign our different projects under the name of PLEIX. Pleix is not a company...just a group of various artists. We've worked together since 2001 but we knew each other since before we created Pleix. We are all complementary technically and creatively and it's an ideal situation for us to be together. Are you represented by a production company here in the US? Yes, we've got a rep in the US, called Furlined. Where else can we see your work, besides MTV? We did few commercials (Audi, LG, Adidas, Pontiac) that you can see on TV. We also like all kind of different fields to show our films: exhibitions, festivals, etc. We just finished an exhibition "D-Day le Design Aujourd'hui," at the Contemporary Art Museum of Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou (June 2005 to October 2005) and another in the Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille, "Volupte Numeriques" (December 2005 to February 2006). Our website is simple to read and easy to update and the perfect place to share our last projects. When we finish a film, we put it right away on the web, we all love the internet...we also love participating in many different festivals! What inspires Pleix? We find our inspiration in our society, our world full of contradictions. We usually try to have a few readings in our films, a bit like a subliminal message. You can watch our videos without thinking of it or notice it and find something more sensitive. People are free to see what they want. We are not so different from other artists but we've got our tastes, our own desires, our sense of humor...being 7 makes our inspiration source very large, coming from many different fields like cinema, art, TV, comic books and cartoons. As we already said, we like producing tension between graphics, videos, sounds and edit that generate different ambiances, atmospheres, and some work on the edge of things and we all love using technical accidents when they're nice! We love being surprised! We love sharing our work with the public. What are you working on now? At the moment we are working on a new commercial for the US and a new "personal" Pleix film that will be ready in few months! We are also showing our film to Colette, a select shop in Paris. A few exhibitions also will be up in a couple of months. How many dogs are in "Birds"? Around 10 dogs. You can watch more videos at www.pleix.net and check out the collective's resident musician at www.bleip.com. Email This Post |
