IDSA, Part 2: Seoul Is Your New Design Home

Move over New York. Step aside Los Angeles. And even, sniffle, move away from the trophy case Chicago. It was announced this weekend at the aforementioned IDSA conference that Seoul, Korea is the World Design Capital for 2010, a title it will hold for a full year. What it means exactly is that they’ll be the host city to a variety of international design conferences and meetings and big events (we’re kinda thinking they figured out the city designation first and then gave themselves three years to think about what exactly it means). Here’s some:
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said in his acceptance speech, “Design will be a driving force in developing Seoul’s economy. Seoul has surprised the world with the ‘Miracle of the Han River’ and great information technology, but will now attract the world’s attention with design.’”He said Seoul would prove that design has the power to change the world.
City officials expect the city brand of Seoul to be enhanced, and the competitiveness of Korea’s design industry to strengthen.
