In Brief: Another Facebook Office for Frank Gehry, Galliano Speaks, Gatsby Fashion

Frank Gehry will design Facebook’s new engineering office in NYC at 770 Broadway, the 1906 building designed by Chicago-based D.H. Burnham & Co. as the “annex” to John Wanamaker‘s growing emporium. Gehry is already at work on a new Facebook HQ in Menlo Park, California.

John Galliano spoke with Ingrid Sischy for his first interview following his scandal-soaked ouster from Dior. “He has begun taking baby steps to re-enter the world of fashion,” notes Sischy, whose piece on the designer appears in the July issue of Vanity Fair. “My prediction: Get ready for his second act.”

• Word on the street was that MakerBot was getting ready to seek $25 million in venture funding, but a sale may be in the works for the privately held 3D printer company, according to the Wall Street Journal.

• “The colors are richer, the dresses more bespangled, and the flappers less perky,” writes Fitzgeraldian fashion expert Deirdre Clemente of the costumes in Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby. So does the film get the look wrong? “[T]here is no ‘wrong’ in an interpretation, old sport,” notes Clemente.

• If you’re more interested in recent fashion history, don’t miss this evening’s conversation about designer Stephen Burrows at the Museum of the City of New York. Journalist Robin Givhan will chat with Anna Sui and Isabel and Ruben Toledo about color blocking, lettuce hems, and more. The museum’s Burrows exhibition is on view through July 28.

• A Manhattan Supreme Court judge suggested that Ron Perelman and Larry Gagosian settle their differences the old-fashioned way, over drinks. ““I really think that these two gentlemen ought to get themselves together at a cocktail party in the Hamptons this summer,” said Justice Barbara Kapnick, according to the New York Post. “This is a crazy case to have going on here in court, and you ought to try to see if this can’t get resolved before I write my decision.”

• Tough question: Jeff Koons sculpture or a fancy rug? Someone opted for the latter yesterday, paying $33.8 million for a Sickle-Leaf Vine Scroll and palmette “Vase” Technique rug at Sotheby’s in New York. That’s a new auction record for a rug.
