Julius Shulman: Still Shooting
Via our same-town sister blog, this wonderful article by Virginia Postrel about 96-year-old-and-working-every-day Julius Shulman. “The Iconographer” is such a perfect name for the article, but also for the work that Shulman does–imagemaking that transcends photography. It was his lens through which an entire generation (maybe two) was introduced to modern Los Angeles architecture, and most likely inspired the westward movement of more than a few families determined to take up residence in one of his photos. Even, maybe, us.
(We just realized the Atlantic link will expire so there’s also an excerpt on Postrel’s blog.)
