Looking Back On the Building of 'Monocle'
We highly recommended that you set aside the rest of your morning and read Dan Hill's recent City of Sound post "Monocle: Design Notes." It's an incredibly detailed and lengthy discussion about Hill's work with Monocle founder Tyler Brule in creating the look and feel of the magazine, both online and in print, as well as creating the content therein. Hill has decided to take a leave from Monocle, now that everything is up and running, so he's offered up the whole scoop on everything that went into the process. We loved every paragraph of it and, once again, we recommend going through the whole thing, uninterrupted by such petty distractions as work, friends, or any sort of fire-based emergency. Here's a bit from the start: We wanted to make Monocle a journalism brand that you had a weekly relationship with via the internet, as well as the monthly relationship via the magazine. Ultimately, this should be daily, if aspirations come to fruition. This weekly relationship would be through a form of broadcast media, using the internet's ability for distributing video - something enabled only in the last couple of years, effectively - and thus conveying the sense of a Monocle broadcast news element, complementing the 'book'.
