Maira Kalman Is Totally Absurd. Absurdly Awesome.

So we went to see Maira Kalman‘s Elements of Style Illustrated-based opera at the New York Public Library yesterday and boy did we have a good time. First of all there were all these cute little girls wearing EOSI-painted t-shirts and holding up cardboard signs with various phrases from EOS and second of all the show rocked our reality.

The opera was in the Rose Reading Room which, as Paul Holdengraber pointed out, is normally quiet so it was totally wack that it was going to have sound! Star sighting was Isaac Mizrahi, who spent much of the performance very seriously playing the eggbeater.

The composer, Nico Muhly, looked like he was 12 and is 24. We *heart* him. Nico + UnBeige = TLA 4-eva. He wrote nine songs for banjo, viola, percussion, tenor, soprano, and “amateurs” with lyrics like “Be elliptical in a straightforward fashion!” and “On arriving in Chicago, his friends met him at the station.”

Those designers. They’re so crazy!
