The only thing is, no matter how much you love this next little item, you can’t really buy it. You can buy a $2,780 Bottega Veneta handbag and you’ll get one, though. Worth it!
After years of scripts and a recent foray into gray sans-serif, Saks Fifth Avenue was in need of a new look and turned to Michael Bierut and Pentagram to make it so. Bierut took one of those old script logos from the 70′s, placed it in a square grid, and broke it up into 64 little squares. You know, like one of those plastic puzzles where you have to shuffle all the squares around? To create a distinctive pattern, the squares can be mixed up in a nearly infinite number of combinations. Almost 100 googols, in fact. (He asked his math nerd friend at Yale.) You can read all about it on Pentagram’s blog.
Best of all, that logo from the 70′s? Part of an identity system designed by Bierut’s old boss, Massimo Vignelli.
The sad ending to this story is that none of this will be available until January 2, which means you’ll have to wait until then to do your after-Christmas shopping so you can walk out with Papa Bierut’s brand new bag.
