Mies van der Rohe’s Fransworth House Appears in Gingerbread Form

Frank Lloyd Wright has been honored with gingerbread in the past, so it only makes sense that another of Chicago’s great architects should receive similar treatment. In case you missed it in the New York Times‘ holiday-themed T yesterday, there was a small story on cake designer April Reed, who has created an incredibly detailed gingerbread-version of Mies van der Rohe‘s Farnsworth House. It’s not cheap at all, running at over four thousand dollars, but if you have that kind of money to throw around, a portion of the sale is going to help repair the real, non-sugar-based house itself, which you’ll remember was already in the middle of a fund-raising session after suffering flood damage this summer.

It took the elves at April Reed Cake Design several days of photo research and about 25 hours to construct the fondant-covered walls, poured-sugar “glass” windows and sugar-paste I-beams and staircases. The project was a natural progression for the Manhattan cake maven, who specializes in stylishly spare confections for weddings and parties. “I tend to pass on overly theme-y cakes, but I have a soft spot for commissions that are intriguing from a design perspective.”
