The Fight Over An Important, Empty Strech of Land
Nothing is ever easy. Particularly when it comes to memoralizing tragedy. We'd read somewhere months ago about the on-going trouble surrounding the construction of a permanent memorial to the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania in September, 2001, but we were surprised to read in this article, "Flight 93 Memorial Design Spat Continues," that there was still a lot of conflict. The fight exists because a handful of people still believe that the memorial has too many Islamic messages connected to it (one of the strongest opponents to the whole thing says the memorial is just two degrees away from facing Mecca, which he feels is not right). In the end, it seems that it's this handful that really just isn't getting past their emotions, but we can see where they're coming from maybe. If anything, it's certainly an interesting look at how strongly ordinary people can feel about design. Email This Post |
