Ohio Disappoints with 3 to 1 Sales of New License Plate Design

It’s been months (months!) since we last talked about license plate design news and for that we are sorry. We realize that likely 3/4 of our daily readership comes expecting plate talk and always leaves disappointed, and again, apologies all around. You’ll recall back before the end of 2009, we were singing the praises of the great states of New York and Montana for casting aside the plague of bright colors and tacky design and returning to the clean, simple, and efficient plates of yore. But now Ohio has gone and screwed that all up. Last year, the state had originally shelved their new plate design, saying that rolling it out would cost its citizens too much. But just six months later, they un-shelved them and put them up for sale. And now we have the news that this new, multi-color, pastoral plate (named “Beautiful Ohio”) has been outselling the original (one of the least offensive newer plates in the Union) at a 3 to 1 margin. Ohio, what’s going on? First you gave us John Boehner, and now this?

“Ohioans just like having a completely unique and different option that they have never had before,” [ Tom Hunter, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Public Safety] said.

With all due respect sir, we’d like you to stop devaluing the words “unique” and “different.” Harrumph.
