John Hood: The Designer Behind the Immigrant Crossing Sign
By way of DesignInfo, we found this interesting piece in the LA Times about John Hood, the California-based designer behind the famous sign found in most border towns across the country, a silhouette of a family running with large bold type above reading, "CAUTION." They talk to Hood about not only his own life, from his Navajo upbringing in New Mexico to his creating one of the most famous images in modern American history, one that is now displayed at the Smithsonian, as well as getting into the strangeness he feels about being the person asked to design it and share its legacy. It's a wonderful character study. Here's a bit: "I heard a commentator on talk radio the other day," Hood said. "He said: 'I want my country back!' American Indians have been saying the same thing for a long time. Really, whose country is this? Why is there so much hatred in this world?" Email This Post |
