Steven Heller on his experience at military school:
"I liked the patches, so there was a certain design component."

On essential design knowledge:
"Everybody show know type, because it's our lingua franca, and everybody should know how to draw because it helps concretize ideas."

On illustration vs. photography:
"I've always found that Illustrators are the most brilliant people on the face of the earth. . . . I never liked photography. I always thought it was too easy."

On authoring 120 books since 1978:
"They're there. But there's a lot of typos."

On what advice he would give to those who want to write a book:
"Get a computer. Hopefully, you know a language. . . .There really is no secret. You'd be surprised how easy it is to publish, especially in the graphic design business. Unlike writers, designers can put together a dummy [book], and those dummies are very impressive."

I kind of look forward to it, because that's the only way I'm going to stop doing books."
