Stuffy Irish Architects Complain About U2′s Clarence Hotel

1023theclarence.jpg

We’ve been working long hours lately and we desperately needed a good laugh. Thankfully, the gods answered our pleas in the form of this piece in Ireland’s Independent paper: “Architect Survey Rejects U2 Hotel.” The story is about an online architecture forum whose members are against the band renovating their Clarence Hotel (apparently around the same time as “Bono’s Tower” is being built?). At the very end of the piece, they pull quotes from the forum and, if you read them like they’re the stuffy aristocrat about to get a pie in the face in some slapstick film, they’re a riot:

Those who logged on blasted the plans as “awful” “rubbish” and “hideous.”

One urged: “Object, object, object. It is far too bulky and would dominate everything. We have made this mistake too many times.”

We don’t mean to make fun of their opposition at all. We just think they talk funny, is all.
