American Craft Crafts a New Website

ea6be5160491788e3e8287a82cc2fd9c.jpg

Awhile back we hinted at the relaunch of American Craft, a 67-year-old magazine that found new life in the hands of editor Andrew Wagner and creative director Jeanette Abbink, who were both founding team members at Dwell. The third issue just landed in our hands and now they’ve even got a pretty new website to match their pretty new magazine.

Designed by Brooklyn-based design team Renda Morton and Holly Gressley, the website maintains the attentiveness of the publication, with dedication to patterns and type. The current issue has nice pieces on Lenore Tawney and Heath Ceramics, but back articles are on there, too, including the not-to-be-missed profile of craft heartthrobs Steven and William Ladd. Damn! Take those boys outta the kiln, they are plenty hot!

Something else you might like is the Blog Beat column, where they capture pithy comments from craft blog contributors and commenters. And might we mention to all devotees of the former mag (who keep writing confused letters to the editor), the publication’s extremely comprehensive Calendar–with craft shows, exhibitions and events worldwide–can now found exclusively online.

American Craft Relaunches With a NY Bash

craftmag.jpg

We’ve been following the redesign of American Craft ever since former Dwell editor Andrew Wagner drifted across the continent to take the reigns. Today, the first issue of the relaunched, reimagined, reinvented mag has made it into our hands, and we have to say, it’s a beauty. Should you want one of the first, pre-newsstand copies to fall into your hands, too, simply attend the relaunch party next week in NY. Details below.

The Craft of the Design of the Craft

americancraft.jpg

We can’t be everywhere design happens but last night we dispatched our Bay Area emissary Christopher Simmons to absorb the “Convergence of Craft and Design” panel sponsored by the shiny new American Craft magazine.

Design and Craft converged and diverged again as American Craft editor Andrew Wagner unveiled the new design and editorial direction of the 66-year-old American Craft magazine Friday night (sneak peek at the new logo, courtesy of my crafty iPhone). While other institutions have recently shied away from the C-word (and others just got MAD), The former Dwell editor thinks that craft is about to come into its own (again). Panelists Shoshana Berger, Sam Grawe, Donald Fortescue and Laura Thomas agreed, as did, we assume, the standing room-only crowd that turned out to wish the magazine well.

American Craft relaunches in September.

What Are You Looking Forward to During Design Week?

We asked, and NY’s top design writers, bloggers and tastemakers responded appropriately. And sometimes, not so appropriately.

Aaron Able
New York Editor, ApartmentTherapy.com
I am most looking forward to … meeting the other ApartmentTherapy city editors!

Andrew Wagner
Editor-in-chief, American Craft
Now that I live in New York I’m looking forward to not feeling like I have to go see absolutely everything in the three days that I’m here (like I always felt coming in from California). Other than that, the Material Connexion conference/symposium has been very cool and quite different than anything else going on during this week. We love Material Connexion!

Julie Lasky
Editor-in-chief, I.D.
I am most looking forward to seeing what Karim Rashid is wearing on his feet.

American Craft To Be Renovated By Former Dwell Staffers

crft_mags.jpg

Well, if this isn’t one of those what-goes-around publishing world stories that creates a warming sensation in the soul. Former Dwell senior editor Andrew Wagner, who we crafted one of our best headlines of all time about after his departure for American Craft magazine, is now teaming up with Dwell’s founding creative director Jeanette Abbink to significantly redesign the mag, including a change in editorial voice:

AMERICAN CRAFT, the 66-year-old international bi-monthly publication, will relaunch in October 2007, the first significant redesign of the magazine in more than 15 years. Former executive editor and founding managing editor of DWELL magazine, Andrew Wagner, recently relocated from San Francisco to New York to steer the magazine’s new direction with former founding DWELL creative director, Jeanette Abbink. Together, Wagner and Abbink helped DWELL win the coveted General Excellence Award from the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2005.
