Green Your Gadgets (and Win Some Green) With Core77

Yes, CES is right around the corner, but Core77 is looking far beyond that, in two ways. Instead of just celebrating gadgets, why not celebrate greener gadgets, by entering Core77′s Greener Gadgets competition, to coincide with the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City on February 1:

Greener Gadgets has partnered with Core77 to seek out design innovations for greener electronics. This design competition will engage established design firms, emerging designers, and design students to come up with new and innovative solutions to address the issues of energy, carbon footprint, health and toxicity, new materials, product lifecycle, and social development. The top entries will be showcased live at the Greener Gadgets Conference for judging by a panel and the audience, and awards will be given out at the end of the night.

Yes, your work will be judged live, on stage, by a panel of experts and audience members (that’s sure to serve up some Command X-quality chills). Prize money is $2500 for first place, $1000 each for second and third place, and all winners and notables will be published on and You can find the design brief and all additional information right here.

Feather Doll Dusters to Forearm Forklift Lifting Straps: Core77′s 77 Gifts Under $77

With a sparkle of wit in a season swarming with too-serious gift guides, Core77‘s Ultimate Gift Guide oscillates between clever, wacky and just plain cheap: Yes, everything is under $77, so feel free to overload your shopping cart. And don’t worry if you can’t carry your loot to the car by yourself, simply snag a pair of forearm forklift lifting straps and do your heavy lifting with a friend.

And yes, in case you were wondering, those hot little dolls are back–not only serving as models throughout the guide, they’re also in a starring role as the #1 pick: Tom Butch‘s Doll Duster, which we’re naming the must-have ironic household tool of the year.

Allan Chochinov’s Got 1000 Words About Sustainability for You

And we especially like these three: Stop Making Crap.

The Core77 editor has another of his exactly-thousand-words essays up, and this time it’s a manifesto on sustainability in design. More food for thought:

…designers are feeding and feeding this cycle, helping to turn everyone and everything into either a consumer or a consumable. And when you think about, this is kind of grotesque. “Consumer” isn’t a dirty word exactly, but it probably oughta be.
