Ocean Explorer, Astronomer, Maestro Win 2009 TED Prizes

TED 2009.jpg

Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) looked to the ocean, the skies, and the concert hall in awarding its 2009 TED Prizes. The just-announced winners are ocean explorer Sylvia Earle, astronomer Jill Cornell Tarter, and maestro Jose Antonio Abreu. Each of this year’s “three exceptional individuals” will receive $100,000 plus “One Wish to Change The World. No Restrictions.” Their wishes will be unveiled at TED2009 on February 5, 2009.

What makes someone TED Prize-worthy? “They will be doing something that has extraordinary potential, something whose positive influence could spread, transcending borders, something that can contribute to the future of life on Earth,” notes the TED website. “We are looking for people who can tap into the energy of the TED Community and inspire them to come along on the journey of making this great change in the world.” Past winners include Dave Eggers, Bill Clinton, Bono, and photojournalist James Nachtwey, who is currently realizing his 2007 TED Prize wish to raise awareness of extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis, a disease that is found in 49 countries and responsible for more than 20,000 preventable deaths annually.

826′s Time Travel Mart Opens In LA

Have we before oohed and aahed over TED prize-winning Dave Eggers826 mentoring centers-slash-retail stores before? Of course we have. Do we get a huge kick out of the San Francisco pirate supply store, or the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.? Definitely. But when the Echo Park Time Travel Mart opened in our hometown this past weekend, well, our allegiances shifted. Most of all because we love the store tagline: “Whenever you are, we were already then.” The space was designed by R. Scott Mitchell and Stefan Bucher took time away from his monsters to design the packaging for products from Mammoth Chunks (mmmm, meaty) to Robot Milk (robots have nipples?). And he even gives us the party report, where celebs like Natalie Portman were seen giggling at his wares, and this walk-through video, so you feel like you were right there at the opening, too.

But of course you really didn’t miss the opening, since you can just travel back to Saturday whenever you please.

McSweeney’s Design Tendency

McSweeneysDesign(image).jpg

Deep within the archives of Print’s Daily Heller (we love it, it’s just so hard to get to it), we learn that McSweeney’s is starting a design studio. Timothy McSweeney’s Design House will be staffed by Dave Eggers, Eli Horowitz, Jordan Bass, and Chris Ying.

We’re not saying this is design out of desperation but this certainly looks like yet another attempt to raise funds for the not-terribly-financially flush publishing house. So hire them, won’t you?
