Editorial Design’s Next Wave

This year, the ides of October holds something more than the usual Friedrich Nietzsche birthday bash and dwindling store inventories of fun size Snickers. The event gurus at the mediabistro.com mothership have outdone themselves in organizing Editorial Design 2.0, a panel discussion with designers and media pros that will take place on the evening of October 15 in New York City. Moderated by Design Matters maven Debbie Millman, the panel will explore the changing media landscape and innovative ways to design for a world in which readers have become users. Confirmed panelists include I.D. editor-in-chief Julie Lasky, Chris Dixon of New York magazine, and Good magazine creative director Casey Caplowe. Get the full scoop and register here.

I.D. Wants a Peek At Your Creative Space

The next I.D. 40 will feature a nice little twist on the regular line up: Designer Workplaces. Editor-in-chief Julie Lasky writes to tell us that they’re looking for submissions from you:

This means we’re scouring the world for the most interesting studios, factories, garages, or any other environment supporting any kind of design work. The 40 final selections will be published in I.D.’s January/February 2008 issue.

Send a few low-res photos along with a brief description of who works there and what makes the place special to press AT fwpubs.com by Friday, September 7. And at the very least pick up your dirty underwear, okay?

I.D.’s Annual Review One Big Glorious Heap of Design

Would you take a look at this cover? The objects of I.D.’s 53rd Annual Design Review all piled up like that? It’s like Julie Lasky just cleaned out her garage. But that’s kinda the cool thing about this year’s picks and the way they’re shot (by Yoko Inoue, mostly at her Brooklyn apartment). They’re real items, for real purposes, discussed–at length–by a long list of jurors who talk like real people.

No surprises in a few places. For one, apparently we still like lights. The product design category winner is Yves “Yellow underwear is not just for girls” Behar’s Leaf Lamp and furniture winner is the super cool Hanabi light.

Understated printed projects by Matthew Ritchie and a birth announcement provide some of the biggest graphic wows, while home improvement enthusiasts will be delighted to hear they can run out and get three of the category winners: a re-engineered WD-40 can (packaging), the modular Drape House (environments) and the S2 Splithead Framing Hammer (equipment).

But the most striking pick comes in the concept category: “Brush & Rinse: Toothbrush prototypes that can redirect water from your faucet to your lips for easy rinsing.” We never knew we needed such a thing. Now, we can’t live without it.

What Are You Looking Forward to During Design Week?

We asked, and NY’s top design writers, bloggers and tastemakers responded appropriately. And sometimes, not so appropriately.

Aaron Able
New York Editor, ApartmentTherapy.com
I am most looking forward to … meeting the other ApartmentTherapy city editors!

Andrew Wagner
Editor-in-chief, American Craft
Now that I live in New York I’m looking forward to not feeling like I have to go see absolutely everything in the three days that I’m here (like I always felt coming in from California). Other than that, the Material Connexion conference/symposium has been very cool and quite different than anything else going on during this week. We love Material Connexion!

Julie Lasky
Editor-in-chief, I.D.
I am most looking forward to seeing what Karim Rashid is wearing on his feet.

The U.S.’s First-Ever Design Criticism MFA Program Is Official

We heard that SVA would be starting a design criticism program about six months ago and now we’ve got the official word: “The Master of Fine Arts in Design Criticism will prepare graduates for careers as design critics, journalists, curators, educators and design managers, by providing the intellectual tools for researching, analyzing, evaluating and chronicling all aspects of design.”

The program will be launched in Fall of 2008 and will be chaired by UnBeige fave Alice Twemlow, with a pretty exciting thesis plan: An annual public conference dedicated to design criticism (could it be the first ever, too?), to be inaugurated in the spring of 2009.

And would you look at this faculty? Kurt Andersen, Paola Antonelli, Michael Bierut, Ralph Caplan, Peter Hall, Jessica Helfand, Steven Heller, Karrie Jacobs, Julie Lasky, Cathy Leff, and Phil Patton. We’d say those MFA candidates are definitely getting the best in the business.
