Andrew Andrew Know Design Design

The same night someone pulled off an exceptional Tobias Wong impression and CITIZEN:Citizen sold his $95 box cutters without a hint of irony, we were much more intrigued with this object, offered by vendors Andrew Andrew during Paper’s 24-hour retail marathon.

Dressed in matching prepwear, the Paper mascots and DJs curated their own collection of design, for sale at prices listed in their own currency, the value of which fluctuated wildly throughout the night. The box cutter could be yours for $94, priced to undercut nearby CITIZEN:Citizen’s real thing. Can you tell the difference? Seriously, can you? We can’t.

Restaged historical photos went for astronomical prices, and we have to say we liked some of them–like Gandhi in front of a brownstone–better than the real thing. There were obvious nods to Moss, and some pieces were especially inspired, like a Lladro figurine coated in car paint, which we found to be awfully beautiful as an homage to liberty. Or something.

After 24 hours in the design business, the Andrews were not feeling as optimistic. When we caught up with them on Saturday at Elizabeth Paige Smith‘s party in Venice, they looked completely beat. “Our market collapsed at about 3am,” one Andrew said glumly. The looked like they wanted to go home.

Hours later and few miles away from the party, we were startled by a car honking wildly at an intersection. We turned to our right, only to find an ecstatic Andrew Andrew, who somewhere between Venice and Culver City had found the will to carry on.

Now We Wonder If Kim Hastreiter’s Red Glasses Are Sponsored By Target

We came across this story about Paper goddess Kim Hastreiter in the New Yorker a few weeks ago but held back, hoping it would maybe be presented online shortly. But on this day of 96-degree malaise we’ve lost patience and will finally report on This One Thing Which We Did Not Know:

In 2002, Hastreiter attracted the attention of the creative team at Target when, in her annual design issue, she devoted two pieces to the store. In one, she took [Murray] Moss to a Target in Queens and interviewed him about the Pop effects of product “striping” (placing color-coordinated multiples on the shelves). For the other, she invited some designer friends to invent new products for the store. Pierre Cardin designed simple, modern coffeepots and thermoses; Vladimir Kagan drew sketches for cocktail shakers, attractive toilet brushes and ergonomic frying pans.

(That part we knew, just wanted to give you some background.)

Three Target executives flew out to New York to meet Hastreiter, and later hired her as a consultant. “I’m this person who’s whispering–or screaming–in their ear, an enthusiast,” Hastreiter says. “If they’re going to Europe, I tell them they should go to these stores, see these designers. When they come to New York I’m the one schlepping them to some place they wouldn’t have gone otherwise. It’s very broad. I’m just a resource for advice. They run things by me.”

In the article it’s revealed that Hastreiter advises Heath Ceramics on their product lines, as well. Moss Glittered and Smoked, But We Craved More Flash

The thrill of seeing the white-hot neon silently announcing itself among the darkened boutiques was absolutely unmatched by any other retail debut in this town. It looks right at home here, actually. Yes, Moss has finally brought its New York design extravaganza to Los Angeles, but it feels like they left a few things behind. For one, the store itself isn’t much of a store–or a museum–at least not yet. There were only about a dozen pieces out last night, and only one encased in Moss’ signature glass boxes.

But back to the party. The pretty, male crowd was made up of mostly deep-pocketed clients–we guessed from the number of people who could list what Moss purchases they had made in the last year–and lots and lots and lots of press. Guests anxiously anticipated the refreshments from Centovini (the Moss-owned restaurant in NY), but it was actually just ‘vini–white, of course. And to quote one well-dressed woman who squawked nosily as she walked towards the door…”What? No gift bags?”

As for the “Glitter & Smoke” theatrical nature of the opening, besides the stunning columns of crystals–shimmering, glamorous perfection and oh-so LA–the scene was predictably fabulous, but much more demure than we’d expected. Maybe if Maarten Baas had burned the piano on site? Imagine the theatrical nature of Murray Moss trying to micromanage that!

As we approached Moss‘ nondescript white storefront on a super sunny Southern California evening, we spotted the mob of people and sighed…another ridiculous velvet rope entrance? Not at all. The crowd was mostly made up of hottie valets. We asked later and, yes, we actually could touch.

We loved the Maarten Baas table and chairs and Tord Boontje‘s sofa, but what we loved even more was watching the staff sweep partygoers off of them.

The Swarovski chandeliers were fantastic, like a garden of diamonds and kryptonite. Those standing among them in the fleeting daylight were lit up like angels.
