Say “Tim Gunn” to ten people and nine of them well immediately reply, “I love Tim Gunn!” (The tenth doesn’t watch television or read style manuals). The debonair and decanal Project Runway mentor, who has a vivid childhood memory of touring FBI headquarters and seeing J. Edgar Hoover dressed as Vivian Vance, is bringing his sharp eye and make-it-work mantra to Quirky. Gunn will visit the NYC offices of the social media-meets-product development company this evening to help evaluate products. Tune in here at 7 p.m. EST to watch the live webcast, during which Gunn will weigh on in on more than a dozen potential app-enabled products for the home that Quirky will develop in partnership with GE.

Burdastyle Branches Out Into the World of How-Tos

This writer is all about fashion and sewing, so she was tickled fuschia to see Burdastyle’s How-To series launched at one of her favorite New York store, Mood Fabrics (the place where you see the Project Runway designers getting their materials). While Mood Fabrics is so generous with their swatches you could actually make something to wear with them, we feel that this store is a tad bit over-rated and over-priced. You can get the same experience at other fabric stores, such as Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, Ill. Did you know that store owners there gladly welcome group tours (this writer went on one the other day and was thrilled to bits and pieces with her goody bag)? While we’re on the subject of Project Runway, check out the Australian version (thanks to the link on the Tessuti Fabrics blog.) That’s not to say you’ll want to ignore tonight’s episode for the American version. Carry on,as Tim Gunn, might say.

Command X Adds Major Comic Relief and Insults Denver Football Fans

No surprise at all, but Michael Bierut is extremely funny when takes the stage as the Heidi Klum or Tim Gunn of graphic design (you take your pick) in his hosting duties for the design reality show “Command X” which will unfold throughout the AIGA conference. Judges are Brian Collins, Noreen Morioka, Emily Oberman, Bonnie Siegler and seven young designers will be eliminated one-by-one.

The assignment gave them a week to design a new logo for the Denver Broncos. Surprise guest judge is the art director for the Broncos, Annie Hellerstein. Both Morioka and Collins hit on participant Matthew Muñez after his rather eloquent defense of his work, and there are multiple snot cloud discussions based on the nose spray trajectory of huffing horses.

Scott Gundersen and Mike Burton go buh-bye. But where’s the catchy cut line?

Next challenge: Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage packaging redesign. Collins declares it delicious.

Cramping the Style Book Market

Some breaking news from Stephanie Murg.

Do you have style? Do you enjoy making style-related pronouncements? Do you frequently refer to “pants” and “shoes” in the singular (e.g., “This paisley dickey calls for a flat-front pant”)? Then the time may be right to take your stab at the latest in publishing trends: the style book.

ELLE’s Nina Garcia is still making the rounds with her guide to chic (The Little Black Book of Style), while her “Project Runway” costar Tim Gunn (one of our favorite people) now has both a book and a BRAVO show touted as his guide to style. Meanwhile, today marks the publication of Style A to Zoe, from ur-stylist Rachel Zoe, who always looks as if she’s just stepped away from Palm Beach patio drinks circa 1974. And in a couple of weeks, the editors of InStyle will publish InStyle: Style 101, in which they tackle such topics as how to pose for a photo and how to set up a bar at a party (hint: set up the bar before posing). Not to be outdone, Bazaar gets into the act this November, with Jenny Levin‘s Harper’s Bazaar Great Style.

We have faith that as style guides go, the best is yet to come. Isaac Mizrahi has just signed a deal with Gotham for How to Have Style, his “illustrated guide to looking fabulous for all occasions.” Our fingers are crossed that Mizrahi will recruit Peter Buchanan-Smith as creative director for the project. The two have worked together on Mizrahi’s visually spectacular, occasionally-published magazine, Isaac’s Style Book, which is available for download here. Note to Isaac: send us a galley!

Another New Pattern Company. Hurrah!

It’s all over the news that Simplicity will be partnering up with Project Runway for the next season’s crop of wanna-bee fashion designers. What’s not so well-known is the fact that companies that make tissue patterns for home sewers are struggling. Neue Mode is biting the dust. Burda has shifted its emphasis to open-source sewing, which basically means you can download instructions for free and print them out on your printer or at a local copy shop. Even Simplicity has shut down its Niles, Mich. facility, moving production to Wisconsin.

So we laud the launch of Go Patterns, which has exactly one pattern to sell right now. This writer plans to support this site even though the dress design available now is a tad bit pricey (when compared to the .99 cent sales on Butterick, McCalls and Simplicity patterns at Hancock’s or Jo-Ann Fabrics). We just need the likes of Tim Gunn and Martha Stewart to plug Go Patterns, and this new site should begin to take off.
