Sanjaya Pretends His Failed Singing Career Was an Industrial Design Project

sanjaya.jpg

Since “American Idol” reject Sanjaya has already ruined his reputation, why not take down the reputation of an innocent educational institution as well? A video is currently making the rounds that features Sanjaya claiming to be Bill Vendall, an industrial design student in the grad program at the Rhode Island School of Design. Apparently this whole off-key charade we’ve been subjected to was actually a project he calls “The Sanjaya Installation,” an assignment made as part of his regular thesis work. Pretending your entire career up until this point was fake is one thing, but pretending it’s a design project? Wrong. You can also watch the follow up video where Sanjaya admits that Will Ferrell put him up to it. We almost believe him, but if Will Ferrell had anything to do with it, wouldn’t it have been…funny?

Shouldn’t RISD take legal recourse to end this libelous scandal? Text your vote to 5537 by 5pm EST.

Thoroughly Modern Johnny

The LA Modernism Show is rolling into town once again on May 4-6. You’ll remember last year’s event was hosted by Will Ferrell, and this year’s celeb host is Johnny Depp, with a theme perfect for the mascara-wearing pirate who has been known to pick up a guitar or two: “Music & Design” will include examples that demonstrate how modern design influenced music of the 20th century:

On display will be the first electrically amplified piano designed by John Vassos and produced by RCA–a 1939 World’s Fair show-stopper along with other unusual pianos including the Rippen Aluminum Grand.

Likewise 20th century guitar makers such as Gibson and Fender remedied the modern demands for louder instruments by creating solid bodied guitars in more exciting shapes and colors with space age names such as the Telecaster, Explorer, and the Flying V on the headstocks. In the last few years prices for these vintage classics have skyrocketed to nearly a million dollars with Eric Clapton‘s guitar selling at auction for $990,000. A collection of rare vintage guitars, 1940′s jukeboxes, speakers designed for the modern home by George Nelson will also be exhibited.

The show, sale and events are all at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, tickets available here.

Sagmeister Asks a Ninja

Ask-A-Ninja-Cover.jpg

We know what you’re wondering…what the hell is a ninja is doing on stage at the Y Design Conference? Ask a Ninja creators Douglas Sarine (dressed and in character as Ninja) and Kent Nichols began their presentation by answering that very question.

Ninja: What are we doing at a design conference?

Nichols: Well, you’re wearing all black. Don’t you fit in?

But fitting in became irrelevant once they showed the latest episode of their web show, which amazingly featured an interview with Blades of Glory stars Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. Ninja was upset they didn’t kill anyone with their “blades” of glory. This is a show that started in their tiny West Hollywood apartments.

Nichols and Sarine first started down this dark path with an animated screenplay about ninjas in Orange County, which has evolved into one of the most popular shows in history–Ask a Ninja has been viewed over 20 million times. With Ninja as moderator, they engaged in a discussion about creating with accessible tools, having an audience that pushes back, and developing a brand, but mostly they were just really, really funny.

Of all the audience questions, Sagmeister asked the best one. “I have a question about light,” he said in that sexy Austrian purr. “Is it a particle or is it a physical state?”

Ninja: You live in the light you create.

Nichols: The light you take is equal to the light you make.

Sagmeister laughed and seemed to be pleased with the answer.
