Earlier this year, we noted former Dwell editor Allison Arieff's return to blogging about design for The New York Times. Now she's headed off into the sunset--Sunset magazine, that is. UnBeige editor emeritus Alissa Walker reports that Arieff has just signed on as editor-in-large of the magazine, which this year celebrates its 110th birthday. "The magazine is working on a brand re-envision/relaunch," says Arieff. "And I'll be working on taking them in a new more provocative/more contemporary direction." She's also planning to double the frequency of her NYT blog posts.

Started by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1898 to burnish California's image, Sunset was named after the Sunset Limited railroad line. We love the cover of the May 1908 issue (pictured above, at left), which was devoted to the American naval fleet's California tour. Today the West Coast living title is owned by Time Warner and run out of Menlo Park offices known for their impressive gardens (which are open for visiting, if you're in the neighborhood).
