TIME Names D.W. Pine Design Director

DW_pine.jpgTIME didn’t have to look far for its new design director. With the departure of Arthur Hochstein (who will continue to be a contributing designer), the magazine announced late last week that the top job would go to Hochstein’s longtime deputy, D.W. Pine (pictured), who will be assisted by Cindy Hoffman. “He is a master of modern design,” wrote TIME managing editor Richard Stengel in an all-staff e-mail announcing Pine’s promotion and praising his “strong, clean, and spare” aesthetic. “As a designer, he is always seeing around corners—and he gets more done in a day than anyone I know.” Pine’s accomplishments at TIME include designing 30 covers and art directing six Person of the Year issues (including this year’s), five TIME 100 issues, and the Michael Jackson special issue. Before coming to TIME nine years ago, Pine was features design director at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he also worked as a sportswriter. Meanwhile, he had an early leg-up on the competition for his current gig. According to Stengel, “his parents were subscribers who used to keep TIME covers in a three-ring binder.”
