UK Fights Thievery With Design Comission

We’re not entirely sure how this will be done short of introducing MagnaVolt, but the government in the UK have put together a group called The Design and Technology Alliance, which will try and push companies into introducing more theft deterrents within their product design, largely focusing on cars and cell phones. And strangely enough, the group isn’t comprised solely of heads of security firms or the like, but rather a semi-diverse bunch, including members of the Royal College of Art and Sebastian Conran of design firm Conran & Partners. However, not everybody’s so certain this will be all that it’s cracked up to be:

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: “Designing out crime is a serious concept that deserves serious attention. However, it is not a panacea.

“Without real action – like slashing police red tape and putting our officers on the streets — it will not be anywhere near enough.

“It will be yet another government initiative that proves more effective at getting a headline than solving a problem.”
