W. Richard West Jr. Brings More Grief to The Smithsonian

0104RickWest.jpg

A little more from the museum world simply because, wow, what a fun, dishy world that’s become lately, right? Case in point comes the story you might have heard a little bit about in passing: W. Richard West Jr., former director of the National Museum of the American Indian, is being investigated for spending $48,500 of the museum’s money for having a portrait painted of himself. This, we remind you, is a Smithsonian museum, which certainly doesn’t have that kind of cash to be throwing around at the moment, nor does it really need this kind of attention. And honest, how bad of a story is? It’s not just a private jet the guy rented. Or even a couple cases of hundred year old scotch and a handful of hookers. He paid for a portrait of himself! Talk about ego. And can’t you almost hear him getting caught? “Um, no, I don’t know where that came from! Someone must’ve just snuck in here and painted me when I was sitting still by the mantle for nine straight hours, I swear!”
