Verizon Communications added widgets for social-networking platforms Twitter and Facebook to its FiOS TV service, joining the one-click Internet-based applications that provide news headlines and weather to its subscribers, CNET News reported.

The Twitter and Facebook widgets are essentially one-way, as users will be able to read updates but won't be able to update their accounts.

For the Twitter widget, FiOS TV subscribers will see Tweets from the entire Twitter community based on either a category or topic they've selected or based upon what they're currently watching on TV, according to CNET News. Twitter accounts are not needed.

When using the Facebook widget, viewers can see status updates, photos and other posted items from their friends or from their own pages.

"We are not trying to recreate Facebook or Twitter for the TV," Verizon Communications vice president of video solutions Shawn Strickland told CNET News. "Viewers don't want to take time out from their TV. But we are trying to bring these social-networking applications to the mass market in a way that enhances their TV experience."

Later this month, FiOS TV subscribers will gain the ability to search and view videos from sites such as DailyMotion.com, Veoh and blip.TV.
