Liberal news and opinion web site The Huffington Post has hired Greg Coleman, former executive vice president of global sales at Yahoo!, as its new president and chief revenue officer.

"Greg Coleman is ideally suited to take HuffPost's expansion to the next level," said HuffPost CEO Eric Hippeau in a press release announcing the hiring. "Greg is uniquely qualified to rapidly build upon the platform we've created and to work with our team to grow our revenue and deepen our engagement with marketers."

Hippeau said that current Chief Revenue Officer James Smith, who is leaving the company, will be working closely with him on the transition.

"James Smith has done a great job as chief revenue officer of our company, starting HuffPost's internal sales and business development efforts and assembling strong teams for both. Under his leadership, we have significantly increased advertising and solidified our brand positioning with key marketers who see HuffPost as offering a unique combination of social news, opinion and community."

In a prepared statement, HuffPost co-founder Ariana Huffington said, "I met Greg a few years ago, when I spoke at a Yahoo! retreat. From our first discussion, I was impressed by his deep understanding of new media, and the tremendous changes occurring in advertising. His success in this field speaks for itself. He is a great addition to the HuffPost team, and I very much look forward to working with him."

This is Coleman's second new gig this year. In February he was named president of Platform-A, AOL's advertising business, but only lasted three months before being ousted, a victim of new CEO Tim Armstrong's staff shake-up as he prepared for the online unit's spinoff from parent company Time Warner.

Prior to AOL, Coleman briefly was president and CEO of NetSeer, a start-up company focused on next-generation search and advertising targeting. For seven years before that Coleman was EVP of Global Sales at Yahoo!, responsible for all ad revenues worldwide. Ad sales reportedly grew from $600 million to more than $6 billion during his tenure.
