Ravens, 49ers, and the Commercials that Define Them

We spend the weeks before the Super Bowl watching loops of highlights and anticipating how popular brands will use their four-million-dollar ad slots, but rarely do we do both at the same time. However, this year is special. After we’ve trampled on all obvious storylines—the retirement of Ray Lewis, Harbaugh genetics, Kaepernicking, etc.—the real clue to Super Bowl XLVII may come down to a pair of Visa commercials from five months ago.

Visa launched their NFL Fan Offers campaign in the fall, giving football fiends the chance to win prizes like Super Bowl tickets or a hangout session with John Madden. To promote the program, Visa ran two significant commercials: one for the Baltimore Ravens, and one for the San Francisco 49ers. With respect to DVR, you may be vaguely aware of NFL Fan Offers, because FOX and CBS ran the commercials so many times each Sunday that I was almost ready to petition for the “Can You Hear Me Now?” guy to come back in their place.

Clay Matthews, Gillette Challenge Fans to Post ‘Predator Pose’ Pics

During his first two seasons in the league, Packers LB Clay Matthews was one of the most feared pass-rushers in the NFL. Then, as some of you know, the Packers defense spent last season derping around, ending the year with the 32nd ranked defense out of 32 teams. Add to that Matthews’ statistically worst season, and it was all really quite sad.

However, while Clay may not be known for crippling QBs anymore, he is still known for his trademark “Predator” pose, thanks in part to a spot from Verizon Wireless last year, which featured a bunch of Packers fans mimicking Matthews’ signature move in a variety of inappropriate public places. Perhaps inspired by Verizon, Gillette has tapped Matthews to hold a Predator Pose Challenge in a joint effort from Ketchum Sports, BBDO and Proximity. The above spot from Ketchum finds Clay with his lustrous, perpetually wet blonde mane awkwardly floating behind a green-screened locker room.

At Gillette’s Facebook page, users can take their own photos of themselves replicating Matthews’ pose, with each photo going toward a $1 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of America on behalf of Gillette. BBDO tells us the work they’ve done for the campaign is forthcoming, but I’m wondering if anyone can beat this woman from the Verizon spot:

L.A.’s Zambezi Sends Some Turkey Day Shout-Outs

Thanksgiving is fast approaching as we all know (can the clocks move faster please?) so let’s celebrate early by posting this toast to the day of family, football and gluttony from Los Angeles-based agency Zambezi (which last gave us a lesson in bling-ology). With a nod to The Office as its intro, the two-minute clip introduces us to the “sharks” that circle the Zambezi office, though these folks appear to be anything but vicious. Thanks go to everything from Black Friday (for altogether different reasons), mom not being on Facebook and even Green Bay Packers linebacker, Clay Matthews. Sure, it looks like it was put together in a day or two, but it’s all in the spirit of the holiday. Is it Thursday yet?
