Twitter, Facebook, Google and many other stalwarts of the internet depend heavily on the infrastructure they have built via their respective APIs (Application Programming Interface). Developers use APIs to make the applications, clients and widgets that you use and enjoy to interact with your favourite websites. For example, TweetDeck, HootSuite and TweetBot all tap into Twitter’s API, which receives billions of calls each day.
Klout, the analytics company that measures the influences of users across their social networks, is the newest member of this API billionaires club, serving more than two billion API calls in June across their 3,000 partner-developers.
This represents a four fold increase in just a few months. And to illustrate this growth Klout have put together a fascinating infographic that details the API usage of the other members of the club, which unveils the vast size of the Twitter ecosystem.
At two billion API calls per month, Klout is a long way short of Twitter’s heady 15 billion per day, which is three times the size of Facebook or Google. Or to put it another way, Twitter sees 50 percent more daily API calls than Facebook and Google combined.
Klout’s API is used by a number of high-profile websites and applications, including The Huffington Post, Radian6, HootSuite, CoTweet, Seesmic and Mailchimp.
It’s been amazing to see all the ways that companies are leveraging the Klout API. From hotels instantly upgrading rooms at check-in to call centers routing calls appropriately and thousands of companies using integration partners like Radian 6, Seesmic, Hootsuite, CoTweet, about.me and others to provide heightened levels of customer service to key influencers. Klout has become a must have for any company dealing with support, customer loyalty, and directed offers. It makes us proud that with every API call an influencer is being rewarded, and we can’t wait to see what innovation the next 2 billion API calls bring!
