Plenty of Twitter users signed up because of the star power on the network. With the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift logging in to tweet their innermost thoughts (or at least plug their latest albums), it’s no wonder celebrity culture on Twitter is so vibrant.
But there are always going to be those who refuse to join the crowd, so we’ve rounded up seven big-name celebrities who refuse to join Twitter… and probably never will.
1. George Clooney
Some stars are not on Twitter, simply because they don’t “get” it, or they don’t have time for it. Not Clooney. This top Hollywood celeb is quite firmly against Twitter.
In a recent interview, Clooney told Esquire in no uncertain terms that he isn’t on Twitter for a reason. And it’s going to stay that way:
“If you’re famous, I don’t—for the life of me—I don’t understand why any famous person would ever be on Twitter. Why on God’s green earth would you be on Twitter? Because first of all, the worst thing you can do is make yourself more available, right? Because you’re going to be available to everybody.”
2. Jennifer Lawrence
She might be cunning and tough as Katniss, but Jennifer Lawrence is actually a little afraid… of Twitter at least. She told The Daily Beast:
“Do you ever feel like the world is progressing way too fast for you? Everybody was talking yesterday about Twitter and Instagram and Tumblr. It was really confusing me and overwhelming me. I literally started losing my breath.”
Unless Hollywood’s most in-demand leading lady gets a breather from movies to spend some time learning Twitter’s ropes, she probably won’t be tweeting in the near future.
3. The Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner
Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner won’t be tweeting his urban poetics any time soon. He says that the network would put too much pressure on him to be perfect.
He says he doesn’t have Twitter because he likes to perfect his words – when writing lyrics, giving interviews or just chatting. So unless he has a total personality change overnight, you probably won’t be hearing from Turner on Twitter (but you can follow the Arctic Monkeys’ official Twitter account to tide yourself over!)
4. Brad Pitt
It was big news this past January. “Brad Pitt Joins Twitter!!!” … or at least, the Chinese version of Twitter.
Pitt doesn’t have a Twitter account, but funnily enough he did have a Sina Weibo account for a short time. The actor signed up for the 500 million+ user network in January, and sent a single, cryptic tweet:
“It’s the truth. Yup, I’m coming…”
Since then, though, the account has been deleted, and it appears as though Pitt’s short-lived foray into the world of social media has come to an end.
5. Bill Murray
Being more detached from the Hollywood scene than most, it might not be that surprising that Bill Murray hasn’t succumbed to the allure of Twitter. He has never set up an account, and apparently has no interest in doing so.
6. Larry David
Funny (or grumpy, depending on your perspective) man Larry David might be a bit of an exception on this list. Back in May of 2012, the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star was actually a member of Twitter… for about a day.
Egged on by a charity project Charity Bribes, David signed up for Twitter and sent a single tweet – earning the Natural Resources Defense Council a cool $10,000. Since that day, thought, David hasn’t returned to Twitter – and considering he hasn’t made any effort to take over the username @LarryDavid in favor of the @LarryDavid4 he used for this one tweet, you can bet you won’t be seeing pearls of old-man-y wisdom from him on Twitter any time soon.
7. Robert De Niro
One of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces, Robert De Niro says he won’t be extending his fame into the Twittersphere. In a bit of a confusing quote given to Parade Magazine, De Niro explains that he just doesn’t “get” Twitter:
“I don’t Twitter or any of that stuff, which is fine. I don’t have a fan club that I talk to or whatever. My young relatives are into everything, so they show me. I use the computer, but Twitter’s not something that I’m into. I think it’s great, and it’s not that I don’t understand it, but in a way, I don’t get it and that’s OK.”
