Digital detoxes are the yoga retreats of 2013, with high-profile technology writers logging off and unplugging, then returning to the Internet to chronicle their experiences.

But many of us can’t afford to cut ties with our tech, and so suffer the mental and physical consequences of gadget overuse. 1 out of 10 people claim they’re awakened a few times week by phone calls, texts, or emails; and excessive use of social media can affect self esteem and communications skills.
