Twitter has renamed their @TwitterGlobalPR profile, which is the public-facing news and statistics updating service managed by Twitter, to @TwitterComms.
The announcement was made yesterday, with this tweet, which read:
The profile then linked to a YouTube video of The Smith’s iconic That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore.
It’s not entirely clear why Twitter has made the name change, or why they felt the need to point out the humor in the previous username, but perhaps it has something to do with the various parody ‘Global PR’ accounts that have been seen on Twitter, the most famous of which was BPGlobalPR, the spoof account that sprung up during the BP oil crisis. I believe the BPGlobalPR account was registered many months before @TwitterComms, so I’m not sure if Twitter registered, or later renamed their account to @TwitterGlobalPR as some kind of homage. Which, either way, would have been a strange thing to do.
Whatever happened, clearly all of this passed me by. We’ve reached out to Twitter for clarification. In the meantime, if you have any inside information, hit the comments to let us know.
