HarperCollins Suing OpenRoad Media over ‘Julie of The Wolves’

It looks like the startup founded by the former CEO of HarperCollins might have stepped on someone’s toes. Lawyers for HarperCollins filed a lawsuit late last week, and they accused OpenRoad of publishing an eBook that HC had the rights to.

OpenRoad had recently signed a deal with Jean Craighead George. They were planning to release an eBook version of the award-winning children’s book Julie of the Wolves. Unfortunately for them, it looks  like George had already signed away the rights.

Did you get an eReader for Christmas? Here’s a nice bundle of eBooks to start filling it up. The SF author JA Konrath posted a note on his blog earlier today. He’s so pleased with the sales that he has seen over Christmas that he has decided to give away 23 titles from his back list.

He’s not giving away everything, but he is including titles such as Shapeshifters Anonymous, Truck Stop, Crime Stories, and SYMBIOS . The free eBooks are spread across several genres and include novels, short story collections, and novellas. They’re only going to be available for the next 3 days, and you can find them via his author page on Amazon.

Mark Twain’s ‘The 30,000 Dollar Bequest’ Is Free eBook

The 30,000 Dollar Bequest and Other Stories by Mark Twain is today’s Free eBook of the Day.

This short story collection, which was originally published in 1906, includes some very funny Mark Twain. Here is an excerpt: “There was no romance-reading that night. The children took themselves away early, for their parents were silent, distraught, and strangely unentertaining. The good-night kisses might as well have been impressed upon vacancy, for all the response they got; the parents were not aware of the kisses, and the children had been gone an hour before their absence was noticed.”

Project Gutenberg has the free download.

Christmas Day Online Shopping Up 16.4% This Year

We are still awaiting the numbers from Amazon and Barnes & Noble about eBook and eReader sales over the holiday weekend, but we have learned that overall e-commerce sales were up this Christmas.

According to a report from IBM, which tracks 500 e-commerce sites not including Amazon, online shopping was 16.4 percent higher on Christmas Day 2011 than last year.

The Associated Press has more about the report: “It found a huge increase in the number of shoppers making their purchases with iPhones, iPads and Android-powered mobile devices. In fact, nearly 7 percent of all online purchases were made using iPads, just 18 months after the tablet computers were released by Apple Inc., said John Squire, chief strategy officer for IBM’s Smarter Commerce unit.”

B&N Nook Color on Sale Today – $180

Christmas may be past, but the sales continue.

Barnes & Noble is having another sale today on their Nook Color. You can usually find the refurbished NC for $150, and today you can find the new Nook Color, with the original warranty, for $180. That’s $20 off the retail price.

If you missed out on the eReader sales before Christmas, here’s your chance to buy one. This could be the last sale of the season, and its not something to be passed up.

On a related note, B&N is also selling the refurbished Nook Color for $150. It’s the same hardware, same warranty, and it’s $30 less. A number of owners have commented that the refurb is in excellent condition and well worth the price.

Every few weeks (this part tends to get repetitive) I like to visit The Pirate Bay and see what are the most pirated ebook titles. I actually refer to buy my eBooks, but I also like to now what the well informed pirate is reading.

It’s been a couple weeks since I last checked, and 2 of the top 5 titles have been replaced with exercise books.

  1. 7 Weeks to 50 Pull-Ups: Strengthen and Sculpt Your Arms, Shoulders
  2. 1,001 Facts that Will Scare the S#*t Out of You
  3. Kindle Library (4,687 Ebooks – Mobi)

Don’t Submit An App Or An iBook Over The Next Week

This week and next are a great time for downloading and reading eBooks, but its not a good time to upload content to iTunes. iTunes Connect, the platform that lets developers submit apps, is temporarily shut down from now until Thursday, December 29 for the winter holidays.

They won’t be taking any books or updates during this time. There will also be a delay for releases scheduled to appear on the iBookstore for the first time, as well as on pricing changes scheduled through the interval pricing system in iTunes Connect.

The iBookstore team wrote in an email to iTunes Connect users: “ We strongly recommend that you do not schedule pricing changes through the interval pricing system in iTunes Connect that would take effect from December 22 through December 29. Pricing changes scheduled to take effect during this date range will not be reflected in the iBookstore and the book will become unavailable for purchase. We also recommend that you do not schedule any books to go live during the shutdown. Releases scheduled with a sales start date between these dates will not go live until after the shutdown.”
