The New York-based supermarket Fairway recently released an iOS app that is one part recipe box, one part shopping list.
The social-savvy chain uses nice photography and a sleek scroll design to hook users in. Once in the app, you can search recipes, and with a click, add those ingredients to a shopping list. Users are also prompted to enter any dietary preferences (no gluten, dairy free, low sodium, etc.) upon entering the app to help Fairway direct the shopper.
Fairway isn’t the only supermarket to offer an app. A number of the big names — Safeway, Giant, Food Lion, Vons, Kroger, SuperValu and Costco — already posses at least one app. But it’s the Whole Foods recipe app that probably comes closest in feel to the new Fairway app. Both focus on the food with big photos and loads of recipes, rather than making the “circular,” or weekly deals front and center. The Fairway app does list sales and store information, too.
The popular grocery retailer that you won’t find in any app store so far is Trader Joe’s.
Fairway has 13 locations across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
