Free Language Education App is Apple’s 2013 App of the Year

It’s been a great year for apps, and now that the year is nearly over, it’s time to highlight some of the best, starting with the apps being honored in the iTunes store. The coveted app of the year award was given to Duolingo, a free, educational language app that uses images and games to teach users up to 6 foreign languages. Compared to the Rosetta Stone at $274, Duolingo is a great bargain and extremely practical.

The app has been downloaded over 10 million times with an impressive 5 star ratings it’s the best app for learning new languages. Duolingo also has a remarkably unique way to monetize:

Somebody who needs a webpage translated uploads it to Duolingo. That document then gets presented to Duolingo students who can translate it in order to practice the language they are learning. When the document is fully translated, Duolingo returns it to the original content owner who, depending on the type of document they uploaded, pays for the translation.

The Game of the Year has been awarded to Ridiculous Fishing, an app that’s been highly recognized on here as well as by Apple. For iPad gaming, Apple recognized Badland and Disney Animated snagged best iPad App.
