Getty Publications Launches Virtual Library With 250 Free Digital Titles

virtuallibrary_screencapIn continuation of The Getty’s Open Content program which began last year, the institute is expanding its free digital assets from thousands of images to hundreds of books. The Virtual Library is a collection from 45 years of art publication from the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.

In an announcement on the Getty’s digital magazine, The Iris, Getty CEO and President James Cuno said, “Creating the Virtual Library comes out of the Getty’s conviction that an appreciation of the arts is crucial to a vital and civil society. We are committed to sharing our educational resources as part of our mission to promote knowledge and understanding of the visual arts in all their dimensions, and we are delighted to give these important works of research and scholarship a presence in the digital sphere.

In the collection you’ll find original books as well as those owned by the Getty like the 2004 exhibition of Cézanne’s watercolor still lifes written by scholar Carol Armstrong and the English translation of Otto Wagner’s modernist manifesto, Modern Architecture – all available for downloads as high-quality scans.
