Mobile payment services company Square has introduced mobile gift cards. Square members can virtually send mobile gift cards to local businesses in their area that accept Square mobile payments.
Users can find participating stores in the Square network, then select the amount, write a gift message, pick a theme and send. The gift card is sent via email. Users can then save the gift card to their Square account and call it up the next time they visit the store. (They can leave their wallet at home).
TechCrunch has more: “Also, when someone buys you a gift card and you have Square Wallet installed, it’ll pop up in your Passbook in iOS 6. Clearly, Square works very closely with Apple, and this has to be the best implementation of Passbook that I’ve heard of to date.”
The gift giver and gift recipient must install the app in order to make it work. The app is available for Android and iOS devices. For more information on mobile payment apps, check out our post on how to accept mobile payments and our post on different apps for making mobile payments.
