CNET Rules: ‘Samsung Galaxy S3 Beats iPhone 5′

CNET made headlines around the tech community this week, deciding that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the first device “to knock the iPhone off its pedestal.

Samsung mocked Apple in an outdoor advertisement in Australia this week, mocking the company’s map app for some potentially dangerous errors. What do you think? Could Samsung climb to the top of the smartphone market in 2013?

Here’s more from CNET: “It took years of iPhone dominance and many months of Android market leadership for a phone with Google’s mobile operating system to knock the iPhone off its pedestal. The Samsung Galaxy S3 won that honor. The GS3 is a truly global phone, available on nearly every carrier, nearly everywhere. Its large, vibrant HD display represents a growing class of phones with broader form factors, and its delicate balance of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a sharp 8-megapixel camera, 4G LTE or HSPA+ support, and an accessible price make the Galaxy S3 a worldwide hero.”

At Launch iPhone 5 Wasn’t As Popular As iPhone 4S At Launch

The iPhone 5 accounted for 68 percent of total iPhone sales at launch, according to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). While this is a big number it is much less than Apple saw with the iPhone 4S, which grabbed 90 percent of all iPhone sales the first month that it was available for sale.

The report also found that Apple has sold less of the 64GB iPhone 5 models, the highest priced of the devices. The 64GB models represented only 9% of iPhone 5s sold during the first month at retail. The 64GB model of the iPhone 4S, on the other hand, made up 23% of those devices sold when that model was introduced.

iPhone 5 shoppers were more likely to buy from Apple than were those shoppers at the launch of the iPhone 4S. Twenty-nine percent of iPhone 5 shoppers bought from an Apple store or Apple.com at launch, while only 13 percent of shoppers bought their device directly from Apple at the launch of the iPhone 4S. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Was ‘World’s Best-Selling Smartphone’ in Q3 2012

Research firm Strategy Analytics reported that Samsung’s Galaxy S3 had topped Apple’s iPhone 4S as “the world’s best-selling smartphone” in the third quarter of 2012–the first time this has ever happened.

However, the company projects that iPhone 5 sales will top Samsung’s Galaxy S3 in the next quarter and once again dominate the world smartphone market. What do you think?

Check it out: “Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18.0 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012. The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever … Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter.”

iPhone 5 Unveiled with 4-Inch Screen

At a press conference in San Francisco today, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 5, a new phone made of glass and aluminum, which is thinner, lighter and taller than previous models. The device comes with a new screen size, a new camera, new audio and a new charger, as compared to previous models. It costs $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB with a two year contract. The phone goes on presale on Friday and ships September 21st in the U.S..

It is 18 percent thinner than previous models at 7.6mm and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S at 112 grams. It has a 326 pixels per inch retina display with 1136 x 640 resolution and is taller than previous models. The screen, which has the same width as previous models, has five rows of icons in addition to the four shortcuts on the bottom of the screen. The new screen size is ideal for watching videos but will require apps to be optimized for the new size. For now, older apps will run letterboxed.

According to Engadget’s live blog, the device works with “ultrafast wireless,” a dynamic antenna that can automatically switch antenna connections to make the connections faster. The iPhone 5 also comes with a new A6 chip and is designed to be more energy efficient. The battery life has been expanded to support 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing. The device will allow users to host Face Time calls over normal cellular networks (for participating carriers). Read more

iPhone 5 Shows Up In Apple Search Results, Then Removed

Apple Insider discovered hints of the iPhone 5 on Apple.com in the search results.

Here is more from the blog: “A search for ‘iphone-5′ on apple.com conducted on Wednesday returned results for a number of pages that do not currently exist. Among them is a link to an inactive press release with a date of Sept. 12 named ‘Apple Introduces iPhone 5.’” Apple Insider also found tips on how to use the phone. We conducted our own test but found that these links had been removed.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5 at a press conference today. We’ll report the news as it breaks.

RUMOR: Apple To Begin iPhone 5 Pre-orders On Sept. 12

In the latest iPhone 5 rumor that we have seen reported, Apple is planning to announce the iPhone 5 on September 12th and will begin taking orders for the device the same day. This rumor puts the announcement ahead of earlier rumors which said that Apple would reveal the new device on September 21st.

The Los Angeles Times has more: “Though the sixth-generation iPhone likely won’t launch or get to customers until Sept. 21, the new report says there will hardly be any gap between the phone’s unveiling and the start of pre-orders. The report also says a second wave of iPhone 5 launches, for international markets not included in the Sept. 21 launch, will come in early October, likely on Oct. 5.”

Details about the phone have been leaking for months including rumors about what the shell, battery, face, Sim card drawer, and logic board will look like.
