Amazon’s Kindle Store in China Faces Regulatory Trouble: Report

Last week, Amazon introduced the Kindle Store in China. But according to reports, the company did so without having all of its copyright licenses in place. Local authorities are apparently investigating if Amazon has the right to sell eBooks in the country at all.

MIC Gadget has the story:

According to the regulation of GAPP, any enterprises that seek to operate in the digital publishing field of China must obtain at least one of the four licenses for publishing, copying, distributing or importing e-books in order to legally operate the business, but Amazon allegedly did not acquired [sic] any of them. Amazon launched its ebook platform on December 13 only by using its partner’s license, where local authorities said borrowing a license was against the law.

At this point, Amazon’s Kindle Store is still live.

In a country which allowed fake Apple stores to be built, it’s nice to see local authorities concerned about copyright law.
