JC: Google Earth, Hi Tide, and Nike Running. Google Earth, because I can find out where the heck I am this time. Besides, being able to send my wife a photo of my exact location, so that she can come and rescue me, is a bonus. Hi Tide, because we live on an island, and our lives are ruled by the tides. Really. Nike Running is pretty awesome too, since it tracks the pace and distance of my runs, and compares them to my earlier ones. So I know exactly how long it would take me to get out of the middle of nowhere to get home in time to beat the tide. Sense a pattern here?

What’s Your Favorite App, Margaret Atwood?
MA: Wattpad. Wattpad allows people to read and write on their phone, and on tablets and computers. It is free. It is of particular interest to kids who don’t have credit cards or people in developing countries, or to young writers who may not want their peer group to read their seedy romances. On Wattpad, they can call themselves ‘Flames of Steel,’ and release it to an audience of readers. It builds out access to reading and writing.
It is not a market for writers, but it is an entry way for writers. A couple of their writers have gone on to get contracts with publishers. It’s in 25 languages and a number of those are in parts of the world that are not going to have those things that we take for granted, such as bookstores and libraries. Read more
