Background: In 1963, the world was introduced to Weight Watchers -- a weight-loss plan that focuses on camaraderie, motivation and healthy living. Five years later, the company debuted Weight Watchers Magazine. Geared toward people who are looking to improve their overall health, not just Weight Watchers members, the magazine featured weight-loss success stories as well as healthy-living tips from celebrities. Classic features include recipes from Jackie Kennedy's chef in the March 1968 issue and all-star golfer Jack Nicklaus' cover issue in June 1976.

These days, Weight Watchers is geared toward busy moms in their 30s and 40s who are generally healthy but have gained some weight over the years. And the publication's mission is to offer women encouragement on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. "What we want to do is say, 'You can do it,'" says vp of content/editor in chief Theresa DiMasi. "We want to get you to a place where you're changing your relationship with food and fitness so you start to look at things in a different way. And it's all manageable."

What sets this service magazine apart from other health-focused publications is an emphasis on addressing the emotional issues that come along with a changed lifestyle. "We write about [what a person is feeling] first and then addressing those feelings in a way that you can then eat smarter and also lose more [weight]," says DiMasi.
