This Daily Beast/Newsweek merger thing is getting serious. How do we know? Because the Guardiansays so. The New York mediarati offer mixed opinions on whether the two money-losing publications can combine successfully. (Money quote from the less-than-flattering Guardian article: "The Daily Beast, into which [Barry] Diller's IAC group pumped as much as $20 [million], has no apparent business plan beyond his deep pockets.") One thing is clear, however: Tina Brown wants a bigger platform to help her compete with Arianna Huffington's increasingly bright star.
