Time Inc. CEO Jack Griffin is starting to make moves in his new position. He inserts Karen Kovacs as People's new publisher. She had been head of sales for the past year, her 18th with the magazine. (When she started, it was still black and white.) Kovacs replaces Paul Caine who gets elevated to executive vice president and chief revenue officer and will continue as the company's style and entertainment group president. Last week, Caine installed Jason Wagenheim as publisher of Entertainment Weekly...

New WSJ. editor Deborah Needleman snags Whitney Vargas as fashion news director, Nadia Vellam as photo director, Fiona Murray as features director, and Andrew Lutjens as market editor... Emily Holt joins Vogue as fashion news editor... The New Republic loses editor Franklin Foer and replaces him with Richard Just. Foer will stay on as editor-at-large... Venus will cease its print operations... Jason Binn gives up the Niche Media CEO position. He'll move to chairman while COO Katherine Nicholls gains the president title...

Alexandra Nicholson departs from her position as social media strategist at USA TODAY. Michelle Kessler moves into the role of social media editor while Glenna DeRoy takes over as social media analyst. Elsewhere in the social media world, The New York Times eliminates its social media editor because "social media can't belong to one person; it needs to be part of everyone's job."... Gray Lady perfume critic Chandler Burr leaves to join the Museum of Arts and Design as the "curator of olfactory art."... Gregg Birnbaum has had enough of New York Post editor Col Allan. The political editor leaves the paper for good after reportedly getting into a heated argument with one of Rupert Murdoch's favorites...

Neil Ashe steps down as president of CBS Interactive. There are rumors that Zander Lurie, SVP of strategic development at the network, will assume some of Ashe's duties...
