Scott Pelley could end up sitting in Katie Couric's anchor chair as long as he doesn't screw up the transition. But is it a job he really wants? According to The New York Times, "some of Mr. Pelley's colleagues privately worry that the Evening News could be construed as a demotion for him." That seems like a bit of a stretch, honestly, even though there is some truth to the statement. The arrangement could come down to how much Pelley can appear on 60 Minutes, his first television love and the only job he ever really wanted. Although Dan Rather cautioned the host against spreading himself too thin, it might have to happen if CBS wants to get out of the third-place slot...
Jonathan Alter is gone from Tina Brown's plaything. The last of the "Newsweek Six" says goodbye after almost 30 years at the publication. He has been contributing to Bloomberg News and The Huffington Post. Howard Fineman (Huffington Post), Michael Isikoff (NBC News), Fareed Zakaria (Time), Jon Meacham (Random House), and Evan Thomas (Princeton) preceded him out the door... American Media Inc. poaches Ron Minutella as vice president of financial planning and analysis... The New York Times kicks up the "Nocturnalist" column to cover six to eight events twice a week. Sarah Maslin Nir will continue helming the beat while a series of stringers will join her... John Lippman leaves the Los Angeles Times entertainment staff where he had been editor of Company Town...
Free Darko, one of the smartest blogs on the planet, is no more. Bethlehem Shoals and the gang move on to bigger and, we presume, better things, but it won't ever be the same... Dan Abrams grabs Peter Lauria as consulting editor at his new Mogulite vertical. The former New York Post journo didn't last long at The Daily Beast before finding himself a persona non grata...
Frontline snags Phil Bennett as managing editor. He had been at Duke University's DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy after leaving The Washington Post in 2009... Jennifer London joins HDNet World Report as a full-time correspondent... Jan Crawford gets bumped up to political correspondent at CBS News. She joined in 2009 as chief legal correspondent before taking over the politics beat days after Jeff Greenfield left... Jeff Zucker's ultimate revenge against NBC could be bringing Couric and Matt Lauer together (or, ironically, not even so long as the Peacock has to pony up millions to keep the Today host)... Rori DuBoff leaves Ogilvy & Mather for Huge, where she'll be vice president, strategy... And there are more changes at ABC News, Glamour and more...
