'Everything is Different' at CNN; Chaos at Daily News

November 4, 2011
The CNN morning shakeout is, well, shaking out. Correspondent and anchor Ali Velshi, who was bounced from the early hours when Soledad O'Brien returned, lands a new role. He will star in "signature segments" for the domestic side and also anchor World Business Today on CNN International starting in 2012. O'Brien, meanwhile, says "everything" will be different when she returns to mornings. But she's not worried about waking up early, crediting her kids for getting her up at the crack of dawn. And Shannon High will oversee the entire four-hour morning show after leaving NBC's Peacock Productions...

In part, he will take over the duties held by associate publisher Melissa Mattiace, who decamps to Entertainment Weekly... Adweek, which lost Michael Wolff, hires Lisa Granatstein as managing editor. She comes from Mochila, but has worked at Mediaweek for more than 10 years... Columbia Journalism Review names Cyndi Stivers as editor-in-chief. She had been managing editor of Gregg Hano is the new senior vice president of corporate sales at Bonnier Corporation...

The New York Daily News is undergoing some changes (read: chaos). Photo editor Gretchen Viehmann resigned, following senior managing editor Stuart Marques out the door. The trio of managing editors -- Adam Berkowitz, Robert Sapio and Scott Cohen -- don't know their job descriptions. And a flurry of layoffs hit the paper, with staffers getting called into a conference room all morning. The layoffs are yet complete, but those confirmed are veteran Bob Kappstatter, Frank Lombardi, Scott Shifrel, Kate Lucadamo and John Roca. Arthur Browne becomes deputy editor, with rumors flying that editor-in-chief Kevin Convey has a short time left. All in all, it's an ugly situation... The Los Angeles Times is cutting another 10-20 people at the end of January. Design, news operations and Web operations will be combined in an effort to save money...

Amy Nelson leaves ESPN for SB Nation. Remember her name. You're going to be hearing it a lot in the very near future... TechCrunch hires Josh Constine and Eric Eldon to bolster its coverage of Silicon Valley. The pair come from Inside Facebook (owned by's parent company, WebMediaBrands) where they were lead writer and editor, respectively... Mediagazer's new team includes Lyra McKee, Patricia Sauthoff and David Connell... And there are changes as Allure, Fortune and more...
