Oprah Cuts 30 Of Her OWN; Atlantic Adds From Gawker

Are Oprah Winfrey's days of turning everything she touches into gold over? That seems to be the case, at least with the Oprah Winfrey Network. The joint venture between Harpo Studios and Discovery Communications lays off 30 employees, roughly 20 percent of the staff. Discovery, which has lost $300 million on the experiment so far, is sending in its own executives in an attempt to solve what ails OWN. They say they are committed to building the network, but some insiders are wondering whether they will pull the plug at some point. OWN recently cancelled Rosie O'Donnell's talk show in an attempt to save money, but ratings will need to improve...

Atlantic Media stops hiring editorial staffers for a moment and taps Chris Batty as publisher of the forthcoming global business news site. He previously led ad sales at Gawker Media. In other Nick Denton-related news, John Koblin jumps from the media beat to sports. WWD's man joins Deadspin, reuniting with former New York Observer colleague Tom Scocca. Elsewhere, Rich Juzwiak joins the flagship site. He is currently an arts writer at The Daily... The Wall Street Journal shuffles its media desk, recruiting Keach Hagey from Politico. She replaces Russell Adams, who will be an editor on the markets desk. "Heard on the Street" columnist John Jannarone will also join the media beat...

Alison Adler Matz leaves her gig as publisher of WWD Beauty Inc. for a job at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. She will be senior vice president and publisher of Everyday Food and Whole Living... Harper's grabs The Paris Review's Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn to be senior editor. She had been handling PR's Daily Blog and takes over for Gemma Sieff, who jumped to Town & Country... Brian Kightlinger is the new VP of corporate sales at Meredith...

Brian Lamb steps down as CEO of C-Span, the network he started. Rob Kennedy and Susan Swain will take over as co-CEOs, with Lamb moving to executive chairman... Mark Thompson steps down as head of the BBC's television channels, radio stations and websites. He has been in the position since 2004, making him the longest-serving chief since the 1970s... And there are changes at Facebook, Univision Television Group and more...
