Daily News Fills Digital Spot; Huffington Reduced

May 4, 2012
The New York Daily News hires Ted Young to manage the digital side of things a week after Scott Cohen left. One of Young's major qualifications for his new job is his previous experience working at the Daily Mail, where he turned the website into a world-beater. (DN editor-in-chief Colin Myler also spent time at the British paper.) The hire comes as a response to the New York Post's recent moves on the Web, bringing in The Daily's Jesse Angelo to drive the ship and hiring former Gawker editor Remy Stern, as well. It's a good, old-fashioned tabloid war, except on the Internet, which is somehow way less fun. Regardless, we're excited to watch the duo battle it out...

Arianna Huffington will get a reduced role at AOL. Instead of overseeing all editorial operations, the Huffington Post founder will have control over just her baby. Private equity firms are interested in buying HuffPo, but it's not going to happen... Gawker Media loses Ryan Tate, who is off to join Wired as a senior writer. He is launching a new venture and writing for the Web. The Conde Nast publication also grabs Jason Fagone as a contributing editor...

The New York Times Company made deep cuts in its corporate wing, including longtime lawyer George Freeman. Corporate Communications SVP Robert Christie says the layoffs were "to adjust to the changing business environment and maintain our financial health."... Nanette Maxim trades food for shelter, moving from Gourmet to Country Living. Her title changes from senior features editor to features editor... The Cut makes another hire, grabbing Christina Han as beauty editor. She moves from an associate beauty editor gig at W... Elsewhere in the beauty editor world, Amanda Flores joins Latina from Family Circle... The Atlantic's senior editor Christopher Orr will be adding to his list of duties. He'll now contribute weekly film reviews and other content to TheAtlantic.com as principal film critic... Lilia Luciano loses her job at NBC News over the George Zimmerman 911 phone edit...

Stephen Engelberg joins the Pulitzer Prize Board, signaling the growing respect for online publications. The ProPublica managing editor, who previously worked at The New York Times, oversaw the coverage that led to the first digital-only Pulitzer... Edelman poaches Alexandra Demers from Burson-Marsteller. She jumps from client executive to senior media executive... Jeanette Brown-Green leaves her account supervisor role at MSL New York for Evins Communications, where she'll be director... And there are changes at NBC's Today show, Entertainment Weekly and more...
