Background: Currently in its 65th year, Archaeology is the magazine of the Archaeological Institute of America. When it first started back in 1948, the book was more academic and was mostly written by archaeologists. Nowadays, however, it aims to "bring archaeology to general readers through the lens of journalism," said editor-in-chief Claudia Valentino. "We are not a journal… We're a popular magazine with archaeology as our topic."
The magazine enjoys an equal number of female and male readers with a median age of 55. However, its Facebook crowd ranges from people in their teens to their forties and Web readers are slightly older. The pub offers "compelling narratives about the human past from every corner of the globe," according to its mission statement. "Anyone who's interested in archaeology probably has a little Indiana Jones in them," said Valentino, "and we know that our readers find stories about archaeological discovery to be exciting. [It's] a really effective way of looking into history."
