Why does the end of the fiscal year have to coincide so neatly with Christmas? All too often it leads to situations like the one at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia yesterday, where -- after a week of board meetings and strategic reviews -- the company's brain trust elected to pull the plug on Blueprint, the young-skewing shelter spinoff of Martha Stewart Weddings. (That was after laying off another handful of staffers in the merchandising division last week.) The magazine was only 18 months old and hadn't made it past quarterly status.
